|---|---|---|
| Otro nombre | Fase directa | Fase inversa |

- Confirm the required dimming range is guaranteed.
Not: LED = trailing edge.
Dónde suele ganar cada método
| Escenario | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit with installed TRIAC dimmers | Borde de ataque | Reuses existing controls; cheapest path when the driver is certified for forward phase |
| Low-wattage circuits under 25W | Borde de caída | Leading-edge dimmers often need a 25W–40W minimum load, causing flicker or strobing below it |
| Deep dimming projects | Borde de caída | Can reach around 1% stably; GaN-based designs push below 0.1% |
| Budget residential lines | Borde de ataque | Dimmers are cheaper and widely available |
| Premium hospitality or retail | Borde de caída | Smoother curve, lower noise, flicker-free performance at low levels |
La trampa del extremo bajo
Most failures show up below 10–20% brightness. A system can look perfect from 100% down to 50%, then develop flicker, dropout, flashing, or a dead zone as the conduction angle shrinks. Remember that minimum LED load and minimum dimming current are two different specifications. A driver may run a 350 mA load perfectly at full output yet lose regulation near its lower limit. There is also a lifespan angle: the hard dV/dt spikes of leading-edge operation stress a driver’s input electrolytic capacitors, and some industry data suggests this can shorten driver lifespan by up to 30% compared with trailing-edge operation. That matters when your brand carries the warranty.

A procurement manager in Singapore once messaged me on WhatsApp with a photo of ghosting lights in a finished hotel corridor. The culprit was a mismatched dimmer, not a faulty driver.
Trailing-edge CC drivers can cause issues on legacy TRIAC dimmer circuits, but problems are avoidable. Universal phase-cut drivers with auto-detection accept both forward and reverse phase control. Always test the exact driver-dimmer pair, check the minimum load requirement, and follow the manufacturer’s compatibility list.

Compatibility is where projects live or die, and a “dimmable” label on the box is never enough. Different symptoms point to different mismatches, so I always start troubleshooting from this table:
| Síntoma | Causa probable | Solución práctica |
|---|---|---|
| Parpadeo en niveles bajos | Conduction angle below the driver’s minimum | Raise the dimmer’s low-end trim or choose a driver with lower minimum dimming current |
| Audible buzz | Hard TRIAC switching exciting driver components | Switch to reverse phase dimming or a driver damped for forward phase |
| Ghosting when off | Leakage current through the dimmer | Use a driver with adaptive damping or bleeder control |
| Dimmer overheating or failure | Cumulative inrush current from multiple drivers | Derate the dimmer or use trailing-edge with soft-start behavior |
| Dead zone on the dial | Driver curve mismatched to dimmer range | Recalibrate the dimming curve at the driver level |
When several CC drivers hang on one leading-edge dimmer, every TRIAC firing event 2 triggers simultaneous inrush current from all the capacitive loads at once. In severe cases that cumulative surge can weld dimmer contacts. Trailing-edge MOSFETs mitigate this through their inherent soft-start characteristics, and a well-designed soft start circuit inside the driver helps further. This is why we always ask buyers how many drivers share one dimmer before quoting a solution.
Los drivers universales reducen la brecha
Newer universal CC drivers use digital signal processing 3 to auto-detect the phase-cut method and reconfigure internal damping in real time, which also helps eliminate ghosting. They reduce risk, but they are not magic. Minimum load, dimmer quality, and wiring conditions still decide the outcome, so we bench-test every ELV dimmable driver against the buyer’s actual dimmer models before shipment. Sometimes the cheapest retrofit answer is simply keeping the existing leading-edge dimmer and specifying a driver certified for it.
Early in our export business, we learned a hard lesson: shipping a standard driver into a market with an unfamiliar dimmer ecosystem creates returns. Custom development solves that upfront.
Yes. OEM/ODM suppliers can build leading-edge, trailing-edge, or universal phase-cut CC drivers to your specification, including custom output current, dimming curve, minimum dimming level, casing, logo printing, and certifications such as CE, CB, SAA, and SELV. Expect sampling, dimmer compatibility testing, and QC validation before mass production.

Our own compact drivers—the white-and-orange units with screw terminals and printed CE, CB, SAA, and SELV marks 4—started as ODM projects for brand owners in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The casing, the label layout, and even the dimming curve were shaped around each buyer’s market. That experience taught us what a serious customization process looks like, and I will share it here so you can benchmark any supplier.
Un flujo de desarrollo OEM/ODM realista
- Define the specification: output current, wattage range, and the supported phase-cut type—forward, reverse, or universal.
- Review the target market’s dimmer ecosystem; TRIAC dimming still dominates many legacy installations, while trailing-edge is standard for premium modern projects.
- Build and test samples against your named dimmer models, not generic ones.
- Tune the dimming curve, minimum dimming current, and low-end behavior for flicker-free performance.
- Complete certification for the destination market, such as SAA for Australia or CE for the EU.
- Run a pilot batch with full QC, then release mass production.
Do not accept “350 mA, phase-cut dimmable” as a complete answer. Ask for the minimum regulated LED current, the minimum input conduction angle, whether the design supports leading-edge, trailing-edge, or both, the specified minimum load, the guaranteed dimming range, and proof the driver was tested with your intended dimmer. In our sampling stage, we document all six answers before tooling begins. For private-label buyers juggling tight deadlines and total project cost, that documentation prevents the most expensive failure mode: a recall after launch.
Conclusión
Leading-edge vs trailing-edge for CC drivers is a matching decision, not a preference. Specify the pair together, verify low-end performance, and demand tested compatibility before you commit.
